Abstract : 3D scanners are frequently used in the construction industry to measure terrestrial displacement, inspect tunnel shapes, and determine dam displacement. In recent years, 3D scanners are frequently employed for digitization of earthwork sites where the data generated is used to guide earthwork equipment. However, there is an absence of an established guideline for effective 3D scanning, and the operation is often left to the discretion of on-site supervisors or surveyors. This study aimed to determine the most effective 3D scanning method for the digitization of earthwork sites. By performing on-site tests, we conducted a comparative analysis for the number of scans, scan resolution, and registration method. The effectiveness of these parameters was determined based on scanning precision and operation duration. According to our results, the highest productivity was achieved when on-site measurements were conducted in mid to low resolution or low resolution and when post-processing was performed through the ¡®Cloud to Cloud¡¯ method. Our results also showed that the number of scans was not as significant as effective placement of the scans.
